January, 2009Cougar Grounds, located in the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management next to Barron’s Restaurant, celebrates its grand opening week January 26-30 with free tastings from 1 to 2 p.m. Like Barron’s, it is staffed entirely by students, but it is far from a junior varsity operation. A full-scale coffee shop complete with hot and cold gourmet coffees, fresh-baked pastries and deluxe teas, Cougar Grounds combines the casual, hip atmosphere of a small urban coffeehouse with the quality of the top coffee chains in the country. |
November, 2008On Dec. 1, Antonio Gianola, award-winning sommelier and managing partner at the nationally acclaimed Catalan Food & Wine restaurant on Washington Avenue in the Houston Heights, will be the featured presenter at the 5th Annual Fred Parks Lecture Series. The series is underwritten by the Fred and Mable B. Parks Foundation. |
October, 2008A couple of hundred students packed a pair of auditorium classrooms at the University of Houston’s Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management to learn about the past, present and future of the spa industry, and the panel of industry leaders did not disappoint. |
On Oct. 15, more than 200 guests, including hospitality leaders from around the country, filled the ballroom at the Conrad N. Hilton College as S. Truett Cathy, founder and chairman of Chick-fil-A; Sir Rocco Forte, chairman of The Rocco Forte Collection; and Steve Rushmore, chairman and founder of HVS, were inducted into the Hospitality Industry Hall of Honor.

Ed Carrette took over as general manager of the Hilton University of Houston Hotel in late August. A familiar face with strong ties to both the hotel and the adjoining hospitality school, he is now poised to lead the hotel through a transformation of both facilities and service. |
September, 2008Roy David Contreras, who had served the University of Houston for 33 years and was admired and beloved by all who knew him, died Saturday after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 53. |
Maintenance chief Donnie Rowell battled a 90 mph wind to secure a broken window. Housekeeping supervisor Maria Trevino-Sassa worked two full days without sleeping, without stopping. Food and beverage director Demetre Souras waited tables, folded bed sheets, cooked bacon and vacuum-dried soaked carpet. They never took their eye off the ball, never shied away from a task that needed doing. |
In August, Jenny Durham was awarded a $15,000 scholarship from the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE). Durham is the first ever recipient of the Vince DeFinis Scholarship, named in honor of Vince DeFinis, a hospitality icon who died in November 2007. NACE established the award to honor excellence in leadership and identity future stars of the catering and events management industry. |
August, 2008Sir Rocco Forte, chairman of The Rocco Forte Collection, Steve Rushmore, chairman and founder of HVS, and S. Truett Cathy, founder and chairman of Chick-fil-A Inc., will take their place among other giants of hospitality during the annual induction ceremony at the University of Houston’s Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management on October 15. Since 1996, the Hilton College has been home to the Hospitality Hall of Honor, which recognizes excellence in hospitality leadership. |
In an ongoing effort to advance educational pathways available to students in the spa and hospitality management field, the University of Houston Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management has signed an articulation agreement with the University of California, Irvine Extension. |
