As one of the largest financial corporations in the United States, Loews Corporations is one of the most diversified. Some of it's subsidiaries include CNA Financial Corporation, Lorilland Inc., Loews Hotels, Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc., and Bulova Corporation. Serving as Co-Chairmen of Loews Corporation are brothers Laurence A. Tisch and Preston Robert Tisch.
Laurence and Robert were both born in Brooklyn, New York. Bob received his degree from the University of Michigan, and Larry received degrees from New York University and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. In 1946 the Tisch family invested in the Laurel-in-the-Pines Hotel in Lakewoods, New Jersey. From there, they leased hotels in Atlantic City. They built their first Americana Hotel at Bal Harbour in the 1950's.
Bob and Larry had invested in Loews Theaters by 1959. After their father's death in 1960, the brothers merged the theater chain with their hotels. Larry became CEO and Bob became President. Using the trading skills and sense of timing they learned from their hotel business, the brothers built Loews into the sprawling empire that it is today. The corporation's main interest is insurance through CNA Financial, which now accounts for 75 percent of Loews Corporation's earnings. The theatre chain was sold in the 1980's, but the Tisch brothers still own 30 percent of the corporation.
Larry and Bob are both asset oriented. Loews Corporation earned $21.2 billion in revenue in 1998 as well as being ranked 60th on the Fortune 500 list.
Besides overseeing the operations of Loews Corporation, Bob also served as Postmaster General of the U.S. Postal Service in Washington D.C. Bob also owns fifty percent of the New York Giants football team. Larry mainly oversees the company's finances and investments as CEO. From 1986-1995, Larry served as chairman of the board and CEO of CBS.
Both Larry and Bob are very involved in their community. Larry is involved in the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies as well as serving on various boards. Bob is the Chairman Emeritus of the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau, as well as a member of the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board of the Department of Commerce.
Today Loews Corporation is now under the management of Larry and Bob's sons. James Tisch is now CEO, Andrew Tisch is Chairman of the Executive Committee and Jonathan is President & CEO of Loews Hotels. The brothers feel the new management team is well prepared to lead the company into the 21st century. Larry and Bob remain as Co-Chairmen of the Board of Directors.
