Real World Experience
Learning Outside the Classroom
Most employers recognize the importance of day-in, day-out real world work experience; it's the reason a student's job history and internships carry such weight in hiring decisions. The hospitality industry is no exception. Diverse and diversified, it requires much of its leaders.
Because a graduate must have industry experience to successfully lead, manage or direct, hospitality-related experience is a degree requirement of all leading hospitality programs. Hilton College undergraduate students must complete Hospitality Practicum I and Hospitality Practicum II — 300 hours of work experience in two distinct areas of hospitality for a minimum of 600 total industry-related hours.
Flexibility and Opportunity
On-campus, off-campus, part-time, full-time, jobs or internships, Hilton College students can choose the work experience that best suits their schedules and interests. Some students take the summer, a semester or even a year off to complete a particularly appealing internship. Others work and attend classes concurrently. All jobs and most internships are paid positions, meaning students can contribute to their living expenses while earning credit. Hilton College's Placement Services will help students find and evaluate the opportunities best suited for them.
In 40 years of preparing graduates to lead the hospitality industry, we've found that those with both a breadth and depth of experience are especially suited for success. Through your undergraduate lab requirements, you'll learn general hotel and restaurant operations and rotate through the different departments of the on-campus Hilton University of Houston Hotel and Conference Center. By using Practicum I and Practicum II as your opportunity to explore the aspects of the industry that most interest you, you'll expand your knowledge base and determine the most rewarding path for your career.
