Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals Research Institute

In January 2002, Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP) joined forces with the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management to develop the HFTP Research Institute (HFTPRI). The Institute is designed to assist members in their everyday management decisions by answering important questions that take up their valuable time.

Who can use the HFTP Research Institute?
The HFTP Research Institute is a free service to dues-paying members of HFTP.

How long will the research take?
Answers to questions are typically received within three business days. In most cases the turnaround time will be even faster. The elapsed time really depends on the workload and the depth of research necessary to answer the request. Some non-routine research work may incur fees.

Where does the Institute get its resources?
Resources for the research come from the Conrad N. Hilton College's library and archives, which contain graduate papers, periodicals, educational videotapes and over 10,000 books relating to the hospitality industry. In addition, the research institute has access to the Internet and to over 20 professors and lecturers with numerous years of experience in the hospitality industry.

What is the HFTP Research Institute's goal?
One of HFTP's strategic goals is to be recognized by the global business community as the authoritative source for information on finance and technology for the hospitality industry. The HFTPRI assists the organization in striving for this goal by providing information on topics such as industry standards, benchmarking information, vendor research, new technology, Internet marketing, energy management and human resource issues. This service allows industry professionals to receive pertinent information without taking them away from their primary job duties.

What other research does the Institute do?

The Research Institute, in conjunction with HFTP, produces a biennial compensation and benefits survey, which is an invaluable resource for hospitality managers to determine pay scales for their employees and themselves. The survey also provides detailed information on salary, employment contracts, deferred compensation, bonuses, performance evaluations, health care plans and certification.

The Research Institute is also actively involved in developing new research that will benefit the membership of HFTP. Currently the Institute is working on projects focused on technology effectiveness, hotel and club financial ratios, and hospitality job descriptions.

Are any of the research findings published?
HFTP's bimonthly magazine, The Bottomline, publishes a "Question & Answer" column in every issue. In this column, the Institute supplies answers to the most frequently asked questions that the HFTPRI receives and keeps the members updated on current projects and events in the hospitality industry. Research findings are also presented at the HFTP Annual Convention.
