Borrowing Materials

Borrowing Privileges

The Conrad N. Hilton College Library offers borrowing services to HRM students, faculty and staff. Students can borrow 4 items per holding; faculty and staff can borrow unlimited items per holding.

To borrow library materials, you must have the following:

  • a valid Cougar 1Card,
  • an up-to-date email and telephone number.

First-time borrowers must sign the library borrowing regulations agreement form.

Loan Periods and Renewals

  Loan Period Renewal
Students 2 week
  • 2 renewals
  • All items due on the last day of class of each semester
  • Must renew in person at service desk
Faculty or Staff 1 semester
  • Unlimited renewals
  • All items due on the last day of class of each semester
  • May renew in person, by phone or email

Exceptions: Items requested by another person may not be renewed. When an item is recalled, library will notify the current borrower with a revised due date. Patrons who have unpaid fines may not renew items.

Returning Materials

Please return or renew materials by the due date to avoid late or lost item charges.

To avoid being held responsible for an item, always return books at our service desk and sign on our check-out log upon its return. Never leave the books at service desk without confirmation.

Overdue, Lost or Damaged Materials

Three email notices will be sent when an item is overdue. The third email is a recall notice. The item may also be recalled if there is another person requesting it. If you fail to respond, you will be assessed a fine of $3 per day after the revised due date listed on your recall notice. The fees cannot be waived when you return the material.

You will be charged full replacement costs for any lost or damaged materials.

Unpaid fines or unreturned library materials may result in a loss of borrowing privileges and a stop on UH student records that will prevent enrollment, transcript requests and graduation.

Recall Service

If a book that you need is checked out to another library user, it can be recalled for your use. You may fill out a recall form at service desk. Our staff will notify the current borrower with a revised due date which can be anywhere from 5 to 10 working days from the date of the recall request.

Non-Circulating Materials

The following types of materials are for library use only:

  • Audio/video products
  • Journals, magazines and newspapers
  • Reference materials
  • Reserved materials
  • Theses or professional papers

Exception: Faculty may borrow library-use-only materials for use in class or for photocopying elsewhere. Faculty should write down their name and contact information at service desk. These types of materials are expected to be returned to the library within 2 to 4 hours on the same day.

The library allows free copying of up to five journal articles each time using the library copier. Please ask our staff at service desk for access.

Payment of Library Charges

Before making payments, please come to our library first with the recall notice. Our staff will fill out a library charge form for you to take to the Business Office. Payments may be made in person at our Business Office in room 227. Please return to the library service desk with your receipt to clear your library record.

Library charges from the UH Libraries System must be paid directly to those libraries.
